Wuliangye liquor got its name hundreds of years ago and its development started from the early days of the founding of the P. R. C. In the middle period of the 20th century, Wuliangye laid its foundation. Today, an age of reform and opening up, Wuliangye develops and expands just like raging fires.
In 1957, " Yibin Wuliangye Distillery" was formally named. Over 40 years since then, Wuliangye went through 5 large-scale expansions:
Its first expansion started in 1958, Wuliangye was allocated 600,000 Yuan by the nation, with which the " Yuejin Zone" on the southern bank of Jinsha River was built, and thus the first expansion was completed. The production capacity of the expanded distillery amounted to 1141t, which represented the scale of Wuliangye Distillery at its very beginning.
In the second expansion, in 1979, RMB18,000,000 Yuan was invested in construction of a new production area on the northern bank of Minjiang River. The new distillery covered an area of 99,600 square meters and had a production capacity of 4,440t.
The third expansion started in 1986. 25,000,000 Yuan was invested in the construction of new workshops that covered an area of 228,000 square meter and had production capacity of 3,000t, enabling a total output of 10,000t for the whole factory.
The fourth expansion lasted from 1992 to 1994. With the 8 billion Yuan of investment, 8 construction works were completed and the area was as large as 200,000 square meters. At the foot of Jiusheng Mountain, there lay the two largest brewing workshops of the world with 6000 cellars arranged in order.
The fifth expansion was completed during the period of 1995~2002 when the group was at its great-leap-forward development period. Wang Guochun who took office as factory director of Wuliangye Group in 1984, proposed after an investigation in North America that: it was the overall goal of Wuliangye to build up a first-class modernized enterprise and make Wuliangye people the first-class employees of new China in as short period as possible. In 1995, RMB150,000,000 Yuan was invested in construction of auxiliary projects. In 1997, the No. 1 blending center of China with a packing capacity of 80,000t was finished. A modern plastic packing workshop of world class with an area of 15,000 square meters was built up in January 1999. In 2000, a brewing workshop with a production capacity of 40,000t was built with the huge amount of investment. At the same time, at the foot of Ziyan Mountain, a lot of big companies involved in fruit liquors, plastic products, die making, electronic components, printing, etc. were set up by leveling down several hills. Thus Wuliangye Group became the "Liquor City" with an area of 7sq.km and the symbol of Yibin,a " Liquor City of thousands of years" .
The Liquor City is full of the charm of spring. The production capacity of Wuliangye Group increased to over 400,000t in 2003 from over 3000t in 1980s. Wuliangye Group grew into a large modernized enterprise group with 19 subsidiaries and more than 20,000 employees from a small factory with less than 1000 employees. Today, the group possesses the largest cellar chambers in China, the largest liquor-making workshops in the world, the most advanced automatic packing lines in the industry and more advanced quality analysis and testing instruments than that of the specialized inspection departments of the nation. These advanced facilities provide effective assurance for stable improvement of production quality as well as for the stability of product quality of different batches. Today, with its production capacity of 450,000t, Wuliangye Group has become the largest liquor-making base of the world, with a production capacity as much as several times, even tens of times of other liquor factories.
Although the production scale is increasingly expanding, Wuliangye Group always selects the 8000t of the best liquor as Wuliangye liquor. Improving quality with scale enhancement, Wuliangye aims at providing the customers with Wuliangye liquor with the best quality. At present, Wuliangye Group is making economic profits as much as160 Wuliangye factories did in 1986. Its economic profits kept increasing continually for consecutive13 years and ranked first in the liquor industry of the whole nation in succession for 11 years. The brand value of Wuliangye had jumped up to RMB 35,826,000,000 Yuan in 2006, maintaining its leading status in food industry of China.
